Two seconds is a long time when you're not prepared to protect yourself or your loved ones. Maybe it won't be a zombie gnawing on your skull in search of brains, but the rumble of an earthquake, a tornado siren, the rush of water or some punk accosting you on the street. You never know when you'll need protection.
Rather than live in fear, a little prudent planning for likely scenarios will go a long way to providing peace of mind. Even a little preparation is better than none.
